40 miles round trip and only $15 delivery? Wow they are already getting a good deal!

That would cost roughly $75 at my shop, which includes, flowers, delivery and smile.

why didn't you suggest they dropship it , and see what ups would charge to deliver it 40+ miles, and why do you even entertain filling anything for them at all?

Our price ........

going from your description and not just what was shown on the site would be $75 - 80 minimum plus delivery of $12 to $15 .... and definately would not be $39.95 plus delivery .... talking snaps and roses etc.

Looks like someone at 1-800-flowers subscribes to the 'filler flowers are free' club. I see million stars, misty and monte used in generous proportions to make the vase look full. Doesn't say if the item is one-sided or allaround.

After subtracting product, labor, delivery (nearby) and commission expenses, we'd have less than $5 to contribute to overhead. A wrong addess or re-delivery (if no one's home) blows that away, too.

That's why I told 1-800 bye-bye. We were loosing money on almost every order, plus calling or emailing them to get more money...not worth my time and we definitely don't miss them!

This is what 1800 thinks should be in that arrangment:
4 white roses
5 st white mini carns
3 st white snaps
30% of bunch of monte casino
20% bun millon star gyp
10% bun caspia
10% bun salal
in 8in cobalt vase

this 39.99 includes delivery charge!
We would charge 47.50 plus 12.95 delivery

We would start that arrangement for $50 + $20 delivery. Since you only have a phone number, why not charge at least a $5 service fee? You're doing the all the work for them & the information their customer should have been able to provide.

$69.95 plus delivery of $19.95 if it's 40 miles one way.

Would not consider doing it if I didn't get all the money or simpler said - would not deliver that far for a discounted order.

Your friends at 1-800

THat is why when you partner with 1-800 flowers you get a higher rebate. It is to cover those price difference you need.

I am glad I can say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use it sometime. It's fun

Reading this thread begs a few questions -

Could most of us create that design for $39.95 plus local delivery at full price? After all, the consumer will be paying almost $51 dollars to 1-800. In my case, we could definitely deliver that item for less. I'll bet RC would deliver it for a lot less.

Is the problem primarily the bundling of delivery charges in the price coupled with the 29% discount given to 1-800?

I can see this type of arrangement as a very good seller. If our stores don't have something comparable in style and impression, perhaps this is a good part of the reason 1-800 sells so many flowers. They are doing a good job of creating designs with a reasonably high level of perceived value in the $35-50 price range.

Our Price

Ok, don’t get mad at me…………BUT.

If we were to make a vase like this, and we WOULD NOT, because we don’t ever buy mini carns, and we just would not sell something sooooo skimpy.

That vase in our shop would retail for $19.99. Delivery $7.95. We work in net dollars here. That price would be based on a sale PAID FOR TODAY. Again I say we do not, and would not send this item out under our name!

*wags finger* There's no such thing as a bad flower, only the thoughtless use of them. ;) I really don't think the photo of that arrangement is bad looking at all but do agree that in person, the design would look skimpy.

That vase in our shop would retail for $19.99.
Was waiting for you or RC to come along and say something like that.

Care to share your target COGS percentage for arranged product? The design labor cost would be very low since this is just a chop and drop.

Cathy,

I do agree with you that the picture is not all that bad. It is a little skimpy however for the value we give our customers in the $40.00 range.

For 35-40 bucks we may use the 8” Brody vase (our cost for this is well under 2.00). We would at least include roses, iris, delph, Sorbonne lily, alstro and caspia. Our arrangements are made until they are full and nice.

We do not count stems. The cost of our fresh product is almost always less than 15% of sales. This without counting. If a mistake is made and that number is higher, bet you would find it my fault in ordering too much, and not the fault of the design department.

I know our prices vary greatly from many others, considering we sell two dozen roses in an 8” brody vase for $29.99.

As for labor costs….. I look to produce items that can be lined up and cranked out in multiples. This greatly reduces costs both in inventory and labor. Stopping our production to make one of these vases for 800flowers may increase what we would have to charge them. That’s why, we sell what we’ve made. Our customers trust that the best possible value is exactly that. WHAT WE HAVE MADE!

Wow! If you can retail that design for $19.99, I am mystified! Just eyeing the design without calculating, I would estimate our price to be a minimum of $65.00. The 4 roses alone would be $16.00.
Bottom line here folks is that 1-800 doesn't give a hoot about what YOU make as the filling florist. You cannot fill any of their designs at their prices and make money. They are laughing all the way to the bank that florists continue to fill their orders!

 That's an astoundingly low number. We hover at 19-20% (26-27% including hardgoods) and think we're doing well at controlling costs. Industry average is more like 25% (30-33% including hargoods.)

Aside from the 'South Florida Factor', is the low percentage from buying deep and controlling/limiting the menu? From standing orders?

A $60.00 mixed vase arrangement from us would never leave in anything less than a 10” syndicate vase. Big, bold and showy. That’s what our customers expect to see from us.

It’s all about a show. Putting on a show with a selection of flowers. Micro managing (and I am not saying that is what you are doing) adds soooooo much cost to the process!!!

I believe in keeping everything simple!! I don’t expect a designer or copyist to be an accountant. Management and ownership is where the creative department is. We set the tone for style. After-all it’s our style. Employees follow the guidelines that are established. As long as the plan and design is solid, success is sure to follow in time.
