Approving New Members

Thanks for the explanation Ryan. I just found it difficult when an applicant communicated only through private message. I would prefer that all communication be for all the voting members. I did tell her that, and she eventually gave me permission to copy and paste to the forum.

but still, what about this person who is able to wander around the site, ask for frienship requests, visit profile pages, etc, but they are not a member? And even in the red?

First, let me say I too am a sustaining member of the V Fan Club and we cannot thank you enough for your gracious and thoughtful greetings to potential FC members. :) We owe you a debt of gratitude.

For many florists, FC is their first foray into a forum. That someone would PM instead of post doesn't surprise me. We have members putting up blog posts to the public when they think they're posing in the forums. We have other members registering their user names as their email addresses, and yet more that post on member pages when they think they're PMing. For users unfamiliar with the way all these bells and whistles work, they just want to communicate with fellow florists (although most seem to figure out how the casino works. ;) ).

I DO ask that all members give a wide swath to introducees and not jump to negative conclusions based on 1) a few poorly chosen words or 2) that the florist works in a non-traditional location. We HAVE seen offensive and obnoxious introductions that deserved a swift 'no', but lets not run off florists in haste assuming more than is there.

Business is tough, but being tough at the outset to potential new members may not always be wise and may run off real florists who just choose their initial words poorly.

That's why V is so cherished, she's fair, measured and balanced in her conversations. V, thanks for setting a wonderful example of online discourse. :yourock:

Confusion

First, my thanks to Victoria for her tireless efforts on behalf of new members.

Second, my confusion is running amuck over the new member posts.

I think things could be a lot more simplified if:

1. there was a specific list of criteria you could see & would need to meet to apply for membership, and

2. Ryan devised a fill in the blank box type page , with the specific questions you want answered (ALL of them), and

3. if the limited PM for potential new members was eliminated. They get no priviledges until they are approved.

I, like Shannon, have a hard time with someone sending friends requests and wandering around the site when they have not been approved as a member.

I, like others in another post, am completely confused as to what the criteria is for membership anymore.

I, like others, get tired of reading posts filled with hostility because questions are being asked of them.

Make the process a little more straightforward, and I thing there would be a lot less "stuff" to deal with.

Just my opinion....but opinions vary...... :)
