Our shop has it easier than most stores since we have access to qualified trainees, but most don't have the luxury of finding decent extra design help on the holidays.

You slave driver. Thats why i can't find any decent help. They get burned out during training!!!

just kidding!!
 
Spoken like a guy who considers his labor to be a fixed cost since the staff doesn't have enough to do!

I resemble that remark.

Couple that with knowing my employees rely on me to make a living wage, so I don't like sending them home early, unless they volunteer.

But don't you know about Murphy's Law of payroll?

staff down and you'll get overwhelmed. Staff up and they'll stand around picking their noses.

I don't like getting overwhelmed - it means I don't have as much time to fart about up in here.
 
I guess that's where the magic crystal ball comes in. Seriously though, I took calls and filled for anyone who asked me to. Shutting the machines off on Saturday meant everyone got a quality delivery from my shop. You can only do it, and do it well well up to a certain point. Every shop varies...and so do opinions.
 
My premise in posting this thread is/was - if you're still sending you need to still be filling. Or you're a part time SFO.

IMNSHO.
 
bloomz, I agree, and I think many others do to, but shutting your machines down and not taking orders are two different things. You have to admit that a smaller shop can be taxed towards the end. For example, I rejected several last minute orders for TF Kincades, sent with no second choice. Or several ridiculously far away orders, that my competition probably rejected/forwarded. It comes to where every minute spent rejecting an order is a minute away from designing or filling for that matter.

....and I was just kidding about the crystal ball.
