I was told by an FTD insider that the floral designers there make the prototypes and then they're submitted for Oldham's approval. In essence, they use his name recognition, but in the end, the arrangements are put together in warehouses (by most likely) minimum wage bouquet makers.

I was wondering if this was the case. He even linked the collection on his blog: Todd Oldham Blog Guess he wants to earn an extra buck.

Half of the funny part for me was the Floral Artistry description Goldie.

I bet you like it cuz of your screen name here.

Well, we just made one. It's so slow today and I'd rather want to see my designer making goldfish than filling watertubes.:tongue

Still having his name linked to it is bad. So he had to approve it. Whether he designed it or not, its tacky.

That looks 100% better than that flat thing with no fins!!

Goldfish, you may be right, but a novelty has no staying power. It's a flash, it's possibly trendy (like that gawd awful singing fish) but won't last.

I don't even think these styles of arrangements are meant to last. As a fashion designer, probably his products are expected to carry an intrinsic obsolescence. He is a master of transient trend, not lasting beauty.

Another point is that his products must have been chosen so that they won't compete with traditional FTD arrangements. It wouldn't make sense for FTD, if Oldham line of products became so popular that sales of traditional FTD products went down.

Traditional florists (like us) might want to pay a closer attention to what those wacky floral "fashions" are all about. Darrel made an excellent point.

If there is a market for wacky/tacky arrangements, however transient that might be, there really is no reason for us to just give that market away to FTD without challenge.

In fact, I've decided that we are going to introduce a new line of "wacky/tacky" floral arrangements this summer. I'm not kidding.

Could someone please tell me where they get these "designers" from, cause I want their job

I think you succeded with your previous picture.

Goldie, and LJVF do make some good points in this thread.

Also, who wants to bet FTD sells more of those than that body sculpture pic that Heather posted?

It's not about beauty its about dollars.

Joe

p.s. or beauty doesn't necessarily equate to dollars.

''NO ONE ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public'' H. L. Mencken

Oh, no you didn't just quote HL Mencken!!! My favorite journalist ever. I never will forget his epitaph:

"If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner, and wink your eye at some homely girl."

Priceless.

Is that serious???? Really???? Man, no wonder FTD just sold and isn't doing well...
