Oh please.....

If I remember correctly RC's post ended with "Shame on you BJ, Hope you don't conduct your life the way you did in this contest" Or something to that effect.

Yeah, I will defend that because obviously he doesn't know BJ AND he needed a little insight.
It must have struck a nerve, cause the post is gone......

I don't know RC I'm sure he's a great guy and a wonderful business person. I do know BJ, he's my friend and I can't believe someone would think for a second he's unethical.

And seriously what would be wrong with asking people to vote?? I thought about it but seriously I was just too lazy to take the time to ask AND I was much more interested in watching my "views" climb at an insane rate. That to me was more fun than anything.

This contest wasn't blind. We all knew who posted and we knew who voted.

This was different than any other contest I ever entered. And I have to say watching all the reactions to every aspect of the contest is really the most fun for me, or should I say most interesting. There's a lot to be said about human nature.

For my design it was interesting to me not just who voted but the vote they gave me.
Did anyone notice MY BOSS didn't even vote on mine?? Nor anyone else's, but she has been busy.
I also noticed that some people voted on others but not mine. And that's OK. For me it's no big whoop..

Like I told my boss, if the prize was a prize for me I might have cared more. Meaning it would have affected my ego more if everyone didn't vote for me, even if they gave me a low score. And I like cash prizes but mostly I like Scholarship prizes, those are my favorite.
And I'm not saying the prize isn't worth going for either. But let's face it the prize is for the store, not me, I just work here. But I do all I can to try to make the store successful...

I was mostly just interested to see what would happen all the way around. And pretty much what I thought would happen did.

The problem with asking people to vote is the pressure it puts on said people...He may not have given it a high pressure sell, but people have that guilt pressure on them...not saying it is the case here, but it does happen...Those same people may have not have voted what they really thought under the pressure...who knows...especially where your name is attached and the person soloiciting the vote would actually know if you voted or not...

I don't care either way, I would have never asked for vote, but that is how I am...I have that same problem in business, if you do not want to shop with me, I will not beg you to...Although I am finding that with some people you need to do this to get the biz...

I wouldn't be surprised if crap like this makes Cathy not want to do this again...What are we 5....Playground antics for sure and all the BFF defending isn't much better...Soliciting votes was not against the rules but it may have garnered points that otherwise would not have been or would not have been as high because of undue pressure...

I personally can't wait until the next competition!!!

Bring it on!

I think all that we are finding out about how we all handle all this competition stuff is great.

I really truly believe everyone who had the guts to enter deserves applause. It's hard to put yourself out there and be so exposed for all to judge.

And Cathy did a great job. I'm sure it'd take more than this to scare her away from doing another one.

Sorry for the delay in the announcement... the cheeses got their wires crossed.

Voting was very, very close with 4 designs being within three points of each other.

Again - :bow_flowe congratulations to everyone :bow_flowe who entered and everyone who rated & voted. It's a very diverse group of designs and our hope is that it inspires viewers to think "roses out of the box", professionally designed and hand delivered.

I will say I was pulling a bit for Flower Knife since his idea was some fabulous, provocative link bait. :> Maybe next time. :)

I agree with Shannon.
This was a great way to get us out of our shells and expose ourselves.
I was kind of surprised that more did not enter. It was fun.
Good for me to try. I didn't really give it too much thought, just looked at a vase I've been wanting to use, had a few spare minutes in my day, and did it. I had an event planner in the shop a couple of days after I made the arrangement and I think she wants to use it for a party next year. Ha!
I've just set up a new photo area, actually, my boyfriend is setting it up for me. Wanted to give the contest and picture a try.
I think many are initmated by AIFD members and wanted to jump on the boat.

Thanks Cathy, for initiating the contest.
How hard would it be to open judging to the public?
I know that this has been discussed on this thread, but, by now it's about a jillion pages....... and I'm at the shop by myself!

How about a dis-honorable mention

fun stuff. thanks for starting this idea!

I do think you should have been able to vote without your name being connected to the rating.

Giving your name to your rating may give some credibility to your critique. Sad to say, there are a few people in this industry that have no credibility with me.

I am a certified judge and hope that maybe I was able to help someone with my comments.

Congratulations to everyone who was in the top 12. Kudos to everyone who entered the contest. This really was a way to get our creative juices flowering (flowing).

You get what you ask for

I removed my post because Ryan said it was beneath me to post what I did.

My point was BJ received 28 votes after 8PM on Sunday night, obviously a campaign job on his part. He ruined the spirit of the competition by doing this, at least for me.

If he would have publicly campaigned for votes it might have been fun or funny, but he didn't. Instead he privately campaigned to gain an unfair, untrue advantage then posted to us about playing fair, which he obviously didn't. This was tough to stomach, and I felt compelled to call him on the carpet for it, even though I knew people such as Shannon would run to his defense and call me a sore loser.

There is nothing at stake here so it doesn't matter, but it should be pointed out that this kind of behavior is the very reason I despise organizations and one-upmanship clubs such as AIFD.

There's a saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything"
I should probably follow that advice more, but sometimes even if it's not nice it needs to be said. I felt the need to say it.

RC

RC, I'm really glad you reposted your thoughts. This is something that should be discussed in the open. To you, I directly apologize if you felt I somehow ruined the spirit of the competition for you. The key word for me is that word you used: COMPETITION. It was indeed a competition. If someone can't be competitive during a competition, then I guess I don't understand the point of competing.

I broke no rules. I did nothing underhanded. I twisted no arms. I had no unfair or untrue advantage! I did nothing that wasn't available to every other member.

There were many people who voted for me immediately after I posted my picture. ALL of those votes got removed for being too early, but many of them never came back to re-vote. I ASKED them to repost the votes that had been taken away from me.

What I did was ask a few members, whose opinions I respect, how they would rank my piece. The contest wasn't on everyone's radar, and I knew I'd never hear their opinions if I didn't ask.

The lesson I hope florists will take away from this is that one of the BASICS of salesmanship is to ASK for the sale. That's how you're supposed to close. ASK FOR THE SALE. But many sales people finish up their presentation and they walk away, never directly asking for the sale. Then they wonder what went wrong.

In politics, during exit polls, when asked why they voted for a particular candidate, a very usual answer is "because she asked for my vote."

At the end of a bridal consultation, for example, I ASK the bride if she'll honor me by entrusting her wedding with my company. I ASK for the job. I ASK for the job.

Lori, I respect your passive approach to business. I could never do that. I wouldn't sleep at night. I am aggressive when I go after business. I have too many families depending on my business for their survival for me to approach business any other way. Especially during tough economic times, I need to get every bit of income I can so I can pay their salaries. If my business goes down, then I have to lay off employees or cut back hours or cannot give raises. It hurts me to do that because I know there are children involved.

SO- I ASK people to buy from me. I ASK them (sometimes BEG them) to shop at my store. I let them know that I WANT their biz and I am HONORED when they choose my shop.

I never do anything dirty, underhanded, unethical, evil or wicked. I respectfully disagree with RC that ASKING friends for votes somehow flies in the face of the spirit of competition. I strongly believe the opposite: that it is exactly in the spirit of competition. I worry about the floral industry if we all sit back and wait for business, afraid to ASK or BEG, while those disposable dollars are going to other home decor and gift providers who aggressively take away the sales that should rightfully be ours.

I fear that the passive approach to competition is contributing to the shrinking of the floral industry. SO many flower shops going out of business. The number of flower shops now is less than half of the number that existed when I started in this business in the mid-80's. That's scary.

Instead of getting mad at me for being a natural competitor, which I am, I think we as florists should all get more competitive!

The feather doesn't belong in your cap.

BJ,

We aren't talking sales here; we're talking design competition, where the object is to pick the best design. Your design was neither the best nor most popular according to the voters. Dazeal's was.

You apologize for my feelings but not for your actions which indicates you feel justified in how you conducted yourself.

You have a lot of initials behind your name. It makes me wonder how you achieved them and how many casualties there where along the way.

The feather doesn't belong in your cap,
RC

Well that's just a shame, and I really do mean that, I'm not being facetious or sarcastic. How about instead of quitting the game, try to make some creative suggestions about ideas for changing the next competition. In the spirit of bettering everyone here, and our visibility and viability to the public, this is a good thing. Please reconsider your decision.

Thanks

Thanks for having this contest...
Thanks for everyone who voted..
Thanks to everyone who entered...

I have learned so many things from all that posted input...you go through life as a floral designer and you may have some people of some influence comment on a design, but mostly you rely on bosses, coworkers and customers to range how well you are doing...Judging by how many bad awful florists have a loyal following, you could realistical be not as good a designer as your head thinks....

That being said, I have learned that I am a pretty darn good designer with the ability for some improvement and fine tuning...I am far from a contest designer, but could be with practice...I have also learned that many of my friends on FC are very good designers and are very courageous...I have also learned that many other FC friends are compassionate when doling out criticism and care to not bruise and ego but to try and mold it into something better, I thank you for your tactful ways of critcising and taking into consideration that sometimes our hearts and souls go into these arrangements and that those pieces can be easily hurt if said to harshly...

I would be very willing to join in again, I thought this was fun and educational on many levels...

Congrats to all who entered, I felt I was a winner as soon as my picture was uploaded, just for getting off my butt and getting it done..

I stand by my actions

Not only do I not apologize for my actions, I reaffirm them. A competition is there to be won. Within ethical bounds, I encourage every competitor to do everything they can to win within the stated rules. Not just for this competition, but for every competition.

We just finished watching the Olympics. Every competitor was looking for any tiny edge they could to win. Some went over the line and broke rules, such as using enhancing drugs. I condemn any rule breaking. But I applaud those who figured out how to stretch their performance to get an edge.

I cannot abandon my competitive nature, whether in sales or design competition. I have trained myself to ask for what I hope for, not to just silently hope. In this contest, I asked for the votes I hoped for. I cannot help it if others hoped silently.

You may be upset with me, RC in Dayton and Cincinnati, and I'm glad you're expressing yourself, but I think you crossed the line with your personal implications about me and my credentials, RC. That is rude and uncalled for. I've done nothing to deserve that kind of attack. I'm not looking for feathers, but I don't deserve arrows.

I do not justify behavior because I have no need to. I am explaining my actions and why I am proud that my creative, unusual and out-of-the-box design garnered more points than any other. I think that it is sad that you encourage anyone to sit silently during a COMPETITION. A competition is a fight.
