I think that LJVF was just illustrating a point that if one design got 50 votes and all of them were 5pts each it would beat another design that only got 10 votes at 10 points each.
It didn't lower someone's score if you didn't vote for them but, it didn't raise their score either.
That's absolutely true. It's what happened in this competition.
But if a design caused enough interest to garner 50 votes, and another only caused 10 people to vote, that also makes a statement. There is no single way to set the rules so that they are perfect for everyone. The only thing you can do is state the rules ahead of time so that everyone knows what they are, and can play fairly by those rules.
In sports, there are many rules changes. That means that one team wins in 2008 that couldn't have won in 2007 under different rules. That's the way it goes....
My design wasn't ranked as high as the one done by Dazeal's designer, but it drew more interest. I hated getting a "5" ranking, but while it brought my score down, it did give me points. People voted to bring down my score when they didn't care for my design, but it got me points! If the rules next time are that the
highest ranking wins, then the results will be different. In that case, I would choose to do a design that is more acceptable to more people, (more sellable, less arty) so as to score higher, knowing that I might not get as many votes.
I specifically chose to design the way that I did, knowing it would cause people to check it out and vote more. I wasn't designing to get universal acceptance (in this case) because I knew that the winner would be the one with the most points, not the highest score.
I'm ready to design differently if the rules change.
To paraphrase Darwin: the survivors are not the strongest or the smartest, but the species most able to adapt.
I adapted.
I adapted my design to get the best results from these particular rules.
I am honored by each person who voted for me. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to score my design and leave constructive comments, both positive and negative. I have learned
more from the negative comments.
