Linda
During Christmas I felt like such a drug addict. Literally. I ate some sugar and then ate some more and then even more and the WHOLE time telling myself "What the hell are you doing." but I just felt so out of control and at the same time excited to be eating the crap. How sick is that?!
Even sicker- I think I'm having "withdrawls" I feel light headed and kind of sick since I've layed off the sugar... maybe I'm just getting sick, man I hope not!
Change is hard and sticking to it is harder. Good luck everybody.
Sounds like classic sugar addiction. And that isn't just table sugar, it is ANY complex carbohydrate. I did find through all of my years of dieting that I had to change my habits for life, not just the duration of the diet. That does not mean you say good-bye to every food you enjoy, it just means that you balance everything out. I have a sugar addiction, mine is in starches. I absolutely LOVE bread, pasta, any starchy carb. So, I changed the kind of bread and pasta I buy.
Sarah Jane, that's a great tip about the spaghetti squash, I was actually raised with that. In fact, we grew ALL of our own vegetables.
Shannon ~ GREAT point about the different meats and their fat and calories. I love prime rib, but it's like 100 calories per ounce ~ Yikes~! I still have it as a treat, but only once a month or less.
Johan, wonderful info about the thyroid. This stupid little gland controls ALL hormones. I thought I had a low metabolism but you've got me beat by a long shot. After I finished my weight loss and started the maintenance portion, I was put on I think 1800-2000 calories per day. Unfortunately, I only burn about 1600. So, I started putting weight on again. I went and had my resting metabolism measured, my body at rest burns 1300. So once I cut myself back to 1600, everything remains the same.
Speaking of calories, it's good to have an approximate idea of how many calories you should be eating daily. The heavier you are, the more you need. I started out at 1500 calories. I am just shy of 5'9", and weighed 225. My original goal was 165lb so at 195lb, I went to 1200. (In my "after" picture, I weighed 145lb). Men need more calories because they tend to burn more simply because of muscles so this is NOT a guide for guys, only gals.
