FC Biggest Loser Challenge

Ryan, your weight loss is remarkable, how are you doing it? Any specific exercises or diet?
I have a food and exercise tracker with Weight Watchers, nothing that I can add to a signature line like yours, which is really cool by the way, but it works well with this diet.

He's a BOY- they always lose faster! Dang it!

Peggy,

Honestly, since the arrival of Toby I haven't been back on the treadmill. For me, like many here, sugar and overeating are the enemy. My sister-in-law alerted me to MyFitnessPal that she is also using. You start off by filling in the basic stats - age, gender, weight, height, lifestyle, activity - then set your goals. The system will help you set healthy targets for daily calorie, protein, carb & fat intake.

Here's a screencap of my daily journal:
2011-01-18_1113.png

Their food database is huge, so I've never had a problem creating diary entries. I don't measure / weight most of the food but my wife is quite the chef and she helps with estimating portions and content.

If anyone here joins up on MyFitnessPal (it's free) be sure to add me as a friend (username "theRKF")!

Just by knowing what I should eat, I do a much better job of avoiding the things I shouldn't. I can even plan for a beer or cupcake :)

This process was a revelation for me, as it was the first time I did more than guess at the quality and quantity of what I'm eating. It's akin to the first time you actually study your wire service numbers and see how horrible they really are compared to where they should be.

My husband and I went and talked to a nutritionist. Our biggest problem was not eating and always being in starvation mode. So eating every 2-3 hours is very difficult at times. But we're sticking to it. Dusted off the treadmill,Total gym,and gazelle. Slowly but surely getting back into a work out schedule. AAAHHHHH!! Going check out myfitnesspal - thanks Ryan

I just renewed my membership so that I can take part in the weight loss challenge.
I just got back from the doctor's office where I tipped the scales at 185 lbs; I'm 5'6'' so I figure that I have to lose at least 40 lbs.
Ryan - I'm going to check out MyFitnessPal and set some goals. At some point I'll post a "before" pic so that I'll have something to motivate me.

Well, I got on the scale yesterday, and no change at all. Argggh, at least there was no gain! Back at it today..............

Something I totally forgot to mention......Sodium.

If you have been eating a low sodium diet and then you eat something really high in sodium, you can "gain" 4 or 5 pounds OVERNIGHT. Especially for women, who have estrogen to contend with OR if you are battling any sort of virus, your body will retain loads of water.

Estrogen CAUSES water-weight gain, so if your body is in the cycle where you are producing more estrogen, you will also retain water.

Don't freak out, as long as you are sticking with your plan, next week you could see a 6-11 pound loss because you will shed the extra water.

I don't do low sodium foods for this reason, it freaks me out so bad! During my maintenance after I lost all of my weight, I had ONE SLICE of Domino's pizza. The next day I had "gained" 4 pounds!

Down 2 pounds as of yesterday...WOOHOO!!!
I'd like to share an exercise opportunity that I've used for the past 10 years..Mall walking.
All of the major shopping malls in Toronto have a Mall Walking club; most charge between $15 to $25 a year to join and that includes a parking pass and t-shirt. The beauty of this club is that you can gain access to the mall as early as 6:30a.m.
My best friend and I start our walk at 7:30 a.m. - there is no traffic, we're warm and dry, the mall offers coat racks and music and Starbucks and Tim Hortons open before we finish! Oh, and we get to window shop at the same time! Each circuit is equivalent to 1/2 mile; we usually walk 8 circuits (4 per floor) for a total of 4 miles in an hour. We generally walk 3 days a week but I'm trying to bump it up to 4 or 5 days. I also bought a pair of Reebok "Easy Tone" running shoes -they're supposed to tone your legs & butt as you walk and you know what -they really work! now if someone could come up with a "gut buster" sweat pant I'd be over the moon!

It's kind of early in the game for most of you, but I just thought I would share this for when you are ready.

When you are "stuck" at a weight and even though you are watching everything, here is a meal that can help. Eat these foods in one meal if you can stand it.

Grilled Chicken, steamed broccoli with no sauce or butter, and grapefruit.

There are combinations of foods like this one that seem to be a plateau buster.

Why does that work AND give me more combos please!!!

I'm plateauing a bit, and having a birthday dinner at my Grandmother's tonight. Can I throw those ingredients on a pizza?

Only if the "crust" is a rice cake ~ maybe squeeze the grapefruit over it for the sauce? Plateauing my patootie! You are still losing, my guess is that it will slow down now that you have lost the most recently gained. Keep those muscles fit, that's why men lose so much easier, more muscle burns 25% MORE calories than diet alone.

Shannon, I don't know why it works. It's the same type of thing for diabetics. They can have a no-no food item if they can balance it with a negative carb food.

Ashamed to say I don't remember any of the other combos, I'll have to see if I can find my materials. That was actually my favorite combo and that's why I remember it.

Man- if you can remember other combos- I'll love you forever and be your very bestest friend!

For some reason the grapefruit is not good to eat with cholesteral meds either. seems like something that healthy should be OK but it says NO right on my Rx.
