Trust me Goldie, this economy hit hard out here too.
Many of us have seen declining property value alone wreak some serious havoc. We're down about 600K last time I checked.

Dinner Menu :
Last night was Kal Kan, tonight Pedigree or Purina , and not even the chunky stuff. LOL

Same thing here with people buying less. Average price down in the 35 -50.00 range for Thanksgiving. Lots more Rose Riot signs popping up everywhere.
Consumers are focusing on the bills, the winter heating, etc.... and spending less.

Hoping for the best.

You're right, Thanksgiving isn't what it used to be, but neither is the tradition.
Families aren't as big, they don't all live in an area where you can get together all at once. They are scattered all across the country.
This is a last minute holiday. Flowers are the last thing on the check list. Don't fear folks, they will come. I made up fresh arrangements and stocked my cooler today.....those that purchased them said " Will these last till Thursday?"
There is a huge misconception out there that flowers that aren't arranged THAT DAY are old. Must be they think the flower fairy comes overnight and gets them all done like Santa Clause.
My prices are $20.00 (little tussy mussy) to $45.00 in the cooler for arrangements and my cash and carry's (which is the biggest seller) range from $6.95 to 12.95 and I sell alot of them.
I have a huge vase of my beautiful Canadian Gerbera in Red, Orange and Yellow on the counter at 5 bucks a piece and every customer has requested I "add a couple" in. Which thrilled me. Adding an extra 10 bucks to a sale is great!
Frankly, I think small families are starting to eat out on these holidays because it is cheaper. Therefore, no flowers for the table.
I cut way back also, and with any luck at all I won't have a bronze daisy in the house on Friday.

I have 3 orders for tuesday so far...Yup, you got it 3...I think I may cry...not sure how to buuy, what to buy, I hate this...

I also have to be in court tuesday from 10-12 from my accident when I got hit by that car last year...and have noone to answer my phone I ahve tried and tried to get someone but to no avail...I am frustrated and last year I did over a 1000.00 worth of biz in those hours...life suks right now...
if you are a teleflora member, they offer an answering service (at a price, of course). i know it might not be the best answer, but i hope this helps you.

yEAH tf ANSWERING SERVICE GOT THE HEAVE HO AFTER THEY ALMOST LOST 3 BRAND NEW CORPORATE ACCOUNTS IN ONE DAY....I got nothing but complaints from how much time it took to get someone on the phone to the fact that they didn't speak good english and they didn't know what they were talking about...The final straw was the day that I was closed for a monday holiday and they told 3 different brand new corporate accounts that I was on lunch and I would call them back...They sent me a message and I never got it til late that evening. they got fired immediately...

Heck Doug

That 's great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear someone is getting the work.

Hi, Long Island, NY here VERY SLOW with orders, WHERE IS EVERYBODY!!!

Scared to death by the media trashing the economy to no end.
No one wants to spend $ as they are deathly afraid they might lose their jobs in the next day or two.

It would be nice if the media would play up the dropping gas prices just a WEE bit. Maybe it will give some hope to a few folks, who will then spend a little money, which will spark a little life back into the economy. Then, maybe a business might hire back a worker, who then might spend a little $ and put 2 sparks of life back into the economy. Then another business, who supplies products to the previous business might hire a worker, who spends $, and...

THEN...everyone will buy FLOWERS for THANKSGIVING!!!

Quite simple, isn't it...

I hear ya!! The media brings everyone down! I did hear a story this morning on GMA about the declining gas prices. First time in three years gas has fell below $2!! That's the most positive story I have heard in quite awhile!

Sales are poor here. We planned to produce approx 30% less, but Mon compared to Mon of 07 we were 40% down for the day, today we should be 30% down or so. I have 150 arr made... still in my back cooler to sell. That will be a challenge - yikes, but we are open a full day tomorrow and 4 hours on Thanksgiving.

Let me try to post something positive - here's to no overtime -lol!

Happy Turkey Day to all!

With one hour still to go today 2 of our 3 shops have there two day total of a year ago and they have covered what little the third one was down. So I am both shocked that we are ahead and very pleased

Hi, Long Island, NY here VERY SLOW with orders, WHERE IS EVERYBODY!!!

Hey fellow LI'er, you aren't alone.

Here's what we are seeing so far (still one day left)...

Wire-in, 40% down
Wire-out, 55% down
Corporate customers*, 60% down
* Now, this is expected, but I'm surprized by the extent of decline. Bank - zero order. Church - very few. Dept stores - half. The only bright spots are dentists - way up. People are having toothaches these days, I guess.

Walk-ins, way below normal

OK, we do have some good news, though.

Call-ins are slightly up. Internet orders are way up. These increases sort of cancel out the decline of corporate and walk-in orders.

But I've got to tell you, it doesn't look good. :help:

My husband works for the post office and said that at least 75 " hold mail" requests came in just this week. I guess we figured out where everyone is...out of town. Now with gas prices down guess everyone figured they could afford to drive to grandma. Looks like there was a benefit to everyone staying home when gas prices were high. Darn, can't win for losing.

Surprisingly, I was kept busy today (just me and the delivery girl in training). I know last year was almost a non-holiday here but this year I have quite a few out of town calls coming in. No wire ins for holiday (a couple for anniversaries) but JustFlowers keeps trying for a town that is in the middle of nowhere and no one services...three calls in two days. One person called and wanted a $25.00 vase arrangement, told her it would be small so she said she'd call FTD and hung up!
Her dropship may arrive on Friday LOL.... (wish I could be a fly)

Thanksgiving (Mon-Wed) has been on the slow decline for the last 10 years. Business over these 3 days is still a bit above average (in relation to a normal, non-holiday week), but for the week as a whole, it's a losing proposition. The increased business over these 3 days does not make up for the lost business on Thursday and Friday as compared to a normal week.

A slow normal week is better overall for me than a brisk shortened Thanksgiving week.

Very little actual Thansgiving orders..some wire ins, hardly any walkins..one did spend 160..that was nice and she said we do "wild" things and loved it..new customer..little does she know..lol
Mostly anniversary, birthday get well..tomorw shouldbe the big test..surprised internet orders really down...
Each year Tksg has been less and less...

Weighing in from Maryland...So far Thanksgiving orders are almost non-existant. I have been getting a few in here and there, mostly last minute, I kinda get the feeling that people are waiting and if they have any cash leftover they will byt a "little" something. But then again Thanksgiving has been on the downward spiral for the last 10 years I've noticed. Gone are the days of every table having a georgeous CP from one of us. Nowadays it seems everyone is just waiting for Christmas and Thanksgiving is just thrown in there, an Obsticle to get through before they can go into the major "Holiday" , sad really. Also another thought...everyone HAS to go to the grocery store and they have their (disgusting) flowers in almost every aisle! We barely stand a chance.
Battening down the hatches here, only buying what I have to to survive.
It's only going to get worse I'm afraid.

Jennifer

It was looking fairly slow around our shop, but the phones went crazy yesterday afternoon. Who knows what today will bring? Interestingly enough, we are getting low on some flowers, so that's a good sign.

May we all sell out of our fall flowers today and tomorrow, for those of you who will open tomorrow.

We had 10 deliveries yesterday and 11 scheduled for today. Praying for last minute walk in traffic or phone orders. I would love to have NOTHING to sell over the weekend.

Sales (phone and web) are up and covering wire orders, which are way down from LY. Overall showing an increase but I'm hoping for walkins after 2pm when most offices around here close for the holiday. Centerpiece sales have been slow so I hope to move some this afternoon.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
