Well I'm gonna say it...

I was a newbie to these post 3 years ago...Yes it was clubbish, but aren't all gatherings, you either fit, don't fit or you force your way in until you find friends...That is my method...I have a very strong personality and came on this scene like a storm, kind of like inferno....she and I are a lot alike. I probably po'd a whole lot of people with my views, but along the way I found friends...

New people do not be afraid, speak up be heard the worst that can happen is some of the more popular people won't like you and will never respond to your posts...who cares, you will find some great friends here, period...may not be the big players, may not even be the medium players, but you will find a group of people you fit right in with...Being afraid just hinders your ability to learn...and even if the big players don't take a liking to you, you still have the ability to glean knowledge from what everyone says regardless how they think of you.

Thom, I saw where you were going with that and it was a bit of a poor choice in todays day and age...but I will forgive you and take the point as it was intended and not read into it that you meant to hurt anyone or that you are a racist...I love your posts and think you have some fabulous ideas...keep it up...I hope to learn from you may things along the lines of marketing my weakest point...

Bloomz, You will probably never get what you desire from this board. You want ideas from people who run big operations and web giants, I doubt any of them are really going to give up how they do it so you can compete with them...Being on the web you may as well be giving someone next door to you the keys to your shop they can compete with you from anywhere. You also tend to keep secrets of your own so why should they be any different which leaves the rest of us, the little guys...We young jedis with so much to learn have lots to glean from these boards, but for you this is a very been there done that kind of place...and the bigger an operation the busier the people that may post useful stuff, hopefully they are not posting bcause they are very busy running their business instead of floundering here trying to get ideas on how to run their business...Some people come here more for a social place, they also like facebook and my space and generally come here to chat and make friends, that is their perogative, it is annoying with endless chatter but sift through and don't get caught up in it, its like being in a room full of gossiping girls, you just have to not bother with what doesn't concern you...

This is what part of being in a community is, you have good and bad nd you just have to take what suits you and leave the rest...Oh by the way, I knew this was coming because you have been posting jokes, every time you start posting 2-3 jokes a day, I take it as Bloomz, thinks this place is a joke againe, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it!!!!

ditto on that. I enjoy Thom also! I just disagreed vehemently with the theory behind the post. I think I understood Thom very well, and didn't mistake his post for a racist statement at all. I actually am really looking forward to meeting Thom saturday in AC.

Admins. does each forum here have a page number assigned to it?

joe

Each forum has it's own URL, so you can link to them directly.

You can also choose to ignore forums and they will not appear on your New Posts search. (Anyone who chooses to ignore the new members forum loses all right to comment on the natural and quality of the additions to the membership.)

We gave FlowerChat some non-floral forums for two reasons:
1) They help build community. We get to know people better and care more when we're not just discussing $19.99 vs $24.99

2) The non-floral posts are going to happen anyway. This way we (hopefully) have a place for them so they aren't cluttering up the business forums. I really like order and "everything in its place" and I swear one day soon I will start banning people for abuse of the Commentary forum. /rant

You folks wanted control of the membership access, you got it. Now that's creating too many posts to read??

You wanted to streamline your reading so we let you block people, forums and even specific threads. Now that's either too much work, or it's divisive?

You want to make an impact on the industry - but heaven forbid we get too many members active here.

We're not changing anything - it is what it is, and it's growing like crazy because it's good.

Some need to be censored. Some feel the need to reply to every thread ~ sometimes more than once. I think limiting daily posts would be great. That way no one could spam the board with their extraordinary insight.

Bloomz ~ You should have put this in another forum so the cranky members could green dot you and nominate this for thread of the week.

This is a floral web site. Do I post non-floral topics? Yes, but not on a daily basis. I, too have been considering blocking 2-3 members. Eliminating a few could reduce your daily posts by at least 50.

...Getting on the cranky train...and just too busy for all the fluff.

Spamming the board is a good term for it - thank you.

I told you all in the first post some weren't gonna like what I had to say...

But it's far from the first time.

I love controversial, thoght provoking threads and anyone must admit I am famous for some doozies that run on close to 20 pages.

But usually they are at least supposed to be about how we can make more money, not that I ate peanut butter for lunch today.

Isn't facebook or twitter for that stuff?

One woman's show boating is another woman's (or man's) idea on how to successfully and creatively problem solve on-the-fly.

I hope members DO share work product and strut their stuff - both here and to the public. If you don't promote your own work, no one else will.

I hope members DO share their victories, in life and in the shop. There are too many defeats not to relish in a few moments of joy.

We are a community. Sharing is what we do.

I completley agree with you on sharing and it is vital for our board to grow. IMO there is a fine line between sharing and monopolizing. It's a personal issue for me and not something the community should have to deal with.

This is just a little off topic, but it seems like it might fit into the general discussion. And I really don't want to start a new thread for it.

I am a real newbie here-only been around for about 5 weeks! I wil say I almost didn't continue after I posted my intoduction. Some of the questions/comments seemed sort of "snobby" and judgemental. You know how when you're in a room and people are talking about you and you want to yell, "Hey, I can hear you!!".

However, Victoria seemed encouraging so I came back and started looking at the posts. WOW! Was I glad I did!! I have quickly become addicted (as you can see). I feel like I have learned more in one month than two years of working! No kidding! It sort of speeds up the process of "thinking" and trying out new ideas. Of course, that knowledge now needs to be put into practice, which is the hard part as we all know.

When I read Bloomz first post I thought, "Jeez, just don't read them all-what's the big deal?" But then as I continued reading through the pages of posts I realized that this is exactly what I have become addicted to! No, not the silly content of this particular thread-but the back and forth of opinions, flaring tempers, forgiveness, questions, agreeing to disagree, and so on. I find the discussion absolutely fascinating.

I know there are people who have been here a longggg time, but I think the board needs constant new members and input to stay relevant. Otherwise, it's just the same conversations over and over again. In retrospect, I can see why comments are made in the intro threads, but as someone totally new to this board, they can be off-putting. It does sort of seem to keep out the budding talent who is just getting started in the industry-who may have fresh ideas and enthusiasm-just not the website and years of experience to prove it. I think there have been some new intros that could have really contributed to this board, but we will probably never hear from them again.

So, my suggestion is to maybe give a little bit more information to people who find their way to this site and explain what the prerequisites are for membership so they don't feel quite so bombarded in the beginning.

Just my two cents.

Don't know why I didn't think of this earlier...

Ryan added that little thumbs down (Groan) button and it displays "

Rather than making a whole lot of members paranoid about posting in Chat or elsewhere, why not use the tool and direct your frustrations at the members you're indirectly talking about in this thread?

Wasn't it you who posted the humping dogs (which btw was hilarious)? And isn't your post just above an example of the kind of post you're objecting to?

Eat that lovely danish.. don't put it... um, there. :)

I checked some stats ... almost 10% of JB's threads have been in the Jokes, Chat or Dirty Jokes forums, not to mention the Political forum.

This may or may not be relevant, but in reading some of the "trivial" posts, I have learned much about the people in here. If one reads carefully, one can discover much about the inner workings of an individual... one can also stumble on someone in need of an ear or two. It pays to take an interest in humanity.

As a person who has had a year full of huge personal issues, sometimes it is neccessary to let people know about personal things that have happened so they can understand where you are coming from in life...maybe someone's posts are off, their mood may be a bit cranky it may make more sense if someone posted that they had some sort of set back in life and are unsure of things...

I personally like to hear when people have babies, get married, won an award, their kids won and award, someone lost 20 lbs, I also like to know, if someone lost a loved one or pet, had a struggle, is unsure of business or personal matters, if they feel like sharing it it must be important to them for us to hear it...I really don't give a rat's behind if Bloomz cares to read about my personal triumphs or struggles, as a matter of fact he can take is raspberry danish and stick it there if he wants, but I do know that some of you do...as do I care about some others struggles, I may not if it is someone I don't know but someone here must care if someone is posting it or maybe they need someone to care...These are the very things that make all of you real to me and one of the many reasons I hate the internet, some peole want it real sterile...I hate sterile..

There are a huge amount of useless posts but maybe they are not useless to everyone..

In general, I find this just to be the most amazing group of friends with so much in common! If there's an issue, people give their opinions, some vary (as Bloomz rightly says), but it's all good. Seems to me that 99.9% of the time, there are no hard feelings. Things get hashed out, and everyone moves on.

It IS fascinating, and really wonderful!

I know, I have, and that's why I feel it's a shame that I feel the need to block it - I too like the socializing aspect of this board.

Or I could start posting pictures of dogs humping 50 or 100 times a day...

But I forgot - I don't have a sense of humor, but I do have a Raspberry Danish.

Have I mentioned that I pooped this morning?

don't worry bloomzie, it will work itself in the end.

.....

....if anyone has read every post in this thread and tried to keep up w/ the other posts on flowerchat today AND tried to do their regular florist work....then folks we are in trouble as an industry because no one has any orders to fill!:itchy:

That comment kinda threw me off too...

Wow, I would have never thought people saw those types of posts that way.

I always find looking at what others do as inspiring.

I'm sure I come off as the biggest narcissist in the whole world. PLEASE know that when ever I post something like that it's not meant to. I just like to share. and I have such a passion for design. No one in my everyday life really gives a poo, so that's why I was so happy to find FC.

I really wish more people would create albums and post their stuff.

I never even heard of a hong kong wrap until a thread was started about them. even though I don't like them, it's good to know what they are and how to make 'em just in case....

I think people's posts can come across as boasting, because of the company we are in!

The fear factor can make people go a little over the top with their posts because they want to make their point made, because it's about to get critiqued! We shouldn't feel that way, and I know some do feel overly critiqued at times.

While I can't go design related with this...

On a personal note:

What do I know about SEO, not much, but by having an opinion and stating my beliefs will often get a better answer out of the gurus here than just asking a question. (Newbie Tip)

While I rant, I will also add that I think we all have to remember that there is definitely a certain level of affection that goes on here for a lot of reasons. I have it for everyone, because of the understanding that takes place. Our friends and family don't have a clue what we go through on a daily basis, but you guys sure do! Those who have spouses in other professions can likely relate. (Some may not care for it, but I sure do)

Anyway.... :yourock:

oh, and just saw this.

Guilty of all 3. Ooops.

Note to self:
-Don't post when crabby
-Don't post when angry
-Don't post when drunk..........

And don't become easily offended, oh yeah if anyone notices a wart on you nose or gets an uncontrollable itch on your privates let me know and I'll extinguish your black candle.:itchy:

Don't have time to read this whole thread, so someone may have posted this. Stop all your whinin!!! If people wanna post non floral stuff in "chat" - it's "chat".... deal with it. Go to CP and block out the chat and new members forums and whatever else doesn't interest you.

Some days I have no time for FC, some days I just read my subscribed threads. I read certain threads by certain people and I'm done. No one has time to read even half the threads on here (I hope). Pick and choose and get over it.

Now with that being said I will shout b/c I hate this...
MAKE YOUR TITLE A REAL TITLE. I NEED TO KNOW WTF THE THREAD IS ABOUT BY THE F-IN TITLE.

I need to shout this one out too....This is so freaking important....

We are busy people, I try to let people know exactly what is in my post... whether it be web related, seo related, design related, cat relatsed or joke related...so you all know what the heck you want to do with my post, maybe you don't have time for another ws post, maybe someone doesn't care about my cat or kid, maybe day to day shop stuff doesn't matter to the event people...title help weed out the crap we don't care about..

Right on and I agree totally :yourock:

Now would you run some of those stats on a couple others? (You know who)

I'm all for personal struggles and triumphs - it's what makes us a close community, but not...well you know, twitter crap ("I'm eating penaut butter right now")

This is a Professional Floristry Board, isn't it?

But I think it may have just been pointed out to me - it's about Casino Cash!!!

I wondered how that cash kept appearing in my account.

The motorcycle board I used to hang out on had a forum called Post Whore threads - that would be hundreds of pages on one word dumb posts.

Maybe that could solve the lust for casino cash.

Ain't it totally ironic that I would start a useless thread about people wasting time starting useless threads??? Well I've gotten a lot of thank yous for finally saying it, so take that for what its worth. I could have raked in a gaggle of green dots had I started it elsewhere.

yup, onions vary.....
