Whoa!!! Holy crap!!!

True, but there is no way that ALL other costs involved, add up to a retail price of $400.

Sure,
talent fees, photographer fees, graphic designer fees, printing fees, on and on. Tons of people working on this selection guide, and all those people do need to get paid. BTW- I wasn't one of them, darn.....

I actually think working for Amy and Dave up in Durango gave me a better perspective on this kind of thing. Dave was an industrial designer and artist and Amy was a graphic designer. they did our print Ads. And they always looked amazing. But it took time and lots of work. It's harder than you think.
I know even with me and the little bit Amy taught me about "cleaning up" my own photographs, it takes time. Most every picture on my facebook profile of my designs have been cleaned up. And most all of them took me about 30 minutes each tweaking them. You know adjusting the light, cleaning up imperfections, etc.

I was once told it takes almost 5k to produce one pic. I still think that seems insane but I trust the person who told me that.

My study guide for CPF alone was $250. And it was just a binder with lots and lots of pages.

Ever looked to see how much a John Henry book costs?

Books are expensive guys.

I've been dying to get my own book made. I have a thousand photos but I don't know how to get that made into a book. Right now I have a computer set up on the counter so people can browse the website. For the younger shoppers I hand them an Ipad to browse the options on the website. They think that's really neat. I really want a book for back-up though. Anyone know where to get something like that made? Hopefully for way less than $400?

I made my own.

I got a scrapbook, and made each page individually. It took me a couple months to do originally, and I'm constantly tweaking it.

I love it as it is now. I got to group the designs how I want it. And if I see that there is absolutely NO interest in one particular design I switch it out.

You can make it as simple, or as fancy as you want

Oh, and it cost me less then $50

and 2 months! :)

The new TF counter book is 400.00...Wow, this just swept me right off my feet...with 20,000 florists at 400.00 a pop that is 8 million dollars...Holy good God, could this book really have cost that much to produce and no wonder we(florists) can't keep up with photography and getting our own images, if this is an idea of how much it costs to get the images just right....these books just better be fabulous, and I mean FABULOUS!!!!

If you average that out over the 45 years we have had to use the current guide that is not so bad!! LOL

There are places online where you can upload your pictures and they will print them off into a spiral binder or book for you and ship it to you. Shutterfly.com is one of them.

We have just a regular photo album that we have our bridal pics and another one that has silks and another one that has fresh designs, not many pics in that one, I get a bit busy.

not surprised on the cost. It is a big revenue stream. Especially if the book only has a few new designs and the rest is reused photos from the previous books. time will tell

I have heard that very few of the arrangements are going to be reused in this book...but you are right only time will tell..

I am loving the shutterfly options. I am creating one now. Thanks!

The $400 price tag is normal, to be expected.

Last I heard, and these numbers are a few years old, the cost to produce the book is upwards of $3 million, between design talent, product, photography, production, distribution, etc.

Somehow I doubt a Vista Print production or $50 scrap book will match the quality and durability of the WS books. The question is: Which do you really need? What is the best fit for your shop?

Remember: "Perfect" is the enemy of "Good Enough" Just don't sell yourself short with low-grade inkjet crap. We still need to look professional :)

Well, that's why I'm asking if anyone knows a good option to make a book using my pictures. The wire service books might look professional but I don't belong to a wire service so it's not an option for me. Also, I don't want a book of other people's work. I want a good book of my work. I'm trying to find the best way to go about that. I don't like these general books with photos of flowers that I don't stock in containers that I don't have. It just confuses things. I think I would rather have a "good enough" book of my work rather than a "perfect" book of arrangements I can't (and don't want to) duplicate.

Sarah, have you tried contacting a local photographer in your area? They may be able to take your pictures and turn them into something great in a book for you. Just a thought. I always try to keep as much of my business local as possible. If you do weddings and have a contact or a favorite photographer I would start there.

These are some of the reasons I made my own. And just because it didn't cost $400 doesn't mean it doesn't look good. I got a great deal on the scrapbook, and a good deal on the printing..

There is a company called Bobs Books - it's an on-line site. I was going to use this option to create a wedding portfolio - but I opted for a traditional wedding album. I have to say they look very professional and arn't too expensive and you can put in text where needed. The only thing I would say if you deside to do this sort of print - don't put in the prices in the book but include a separate laminated price list. It willcover you if you need to change prices easily and still maintain a image.

You might also be interested that starting in February TF will start copying FTD and charge you $14.95 per month for life. They might have forgot to mention this. This is how they claim to now have a "living" selection guide. So for only $44.85 a quarter you can pay for them to send you the next overpriced holiday items!

You might be interested to hear their unrealistic time line..... the FSG gets to you sometime in late Oct/ early Nov and then it goes live on Nov 29th and all old images are then dead. So as of the first of December you will have to have them all re-priced to your SRP's. If you have TF website they will load them all for you automatically and with their prices. Have fun!

New images are nice but who thought this time line would not be a problem?

I suggest you start now contacting TF about the transition.

Cheers,

Keith

PS if the cost is 3 mill then 15,000 members times $400 is 6 mill looks like the Resnicks will be acquiring more farms!

Oh GREAT!!!! just what I need while I'm on Maternity leave....this is my department and no one else can do it.
Thanks a lot for sharing Keith. I would have been SUPER pissed to wake up one morning and find out my whole website is changed.

I don't know ryan. I can do some amzaing things with $400.00. Of course it would be my own images and that would be really awesome. But on serious note why do we have to have a book when customers can access the web? I know not all shops are like me but we really should have a choice. Besides I really don't feel like have a Teleflora logo exposed in my shop. Everyday Flowers logo looks better and its promoting my brand.

Consumers have been trained to ask to look at a book.

I've been busy retraining my customers, especially for out of my delivery area. I 100% send with a color palette, container preference, and price. I am constantly convincing people to let the receiving florist choose from their best instead of trying to replicate something that never really existed anyway.

I DO let them look at a JH book to "get ideas".
