Battle of the Flower Designers- March Madness Tournament 2010

Heads up for linking to polls

Cathy and Adam,

Both of you deserve a standing ovation for all of your work and effort.:grovel: But this will have to do!

Just a heads up.....I followed one of the links and did my voting. Then, copied and pasted the link and put it on facebook. Got a message back from a friend saying she could not figure out how to vote. Apparently, once you vote, it just shows the percentages and you cannot vote again, good. But of course, that is the link I had up.

So......if anybody decides to link and give people a chance to vote, put the link in BEFORE you vote. This is probably a big DUH!! for most everybody but me. Oh well. I'm with stupid!

Has anyone heard from Ricky? The phone number I tried didn't work. Do any of you have a phone number for me. We need to get together on judging this incredible contest.

I have suffered a stroke of bad luck. The power supply connection on my laptop is fried and I'll have to put it in the shop for repairs. As a result, I am temporarily without computer access......For how long I do not know.

Just wanted to let you all know.

Good news and bad news......

The bad news is, Ricky is nowhere to be found, cannot contact him by phone or email/PM

We may have a bad phone# so, if there is anyone who knows how to get a hold of him, please have him contact me or Carol Bice ASAP!

The good news is, Carol has finished her score sheets and has results! If by some chance Ricky cannot get to a computer soon or get in contact with Carol ASAP, we may have to just go with Carols score sheets only.

I hope Ricky will get his labtop fixed in time :)

PS-

My original idea for round 2, was to have brand new design entries for the 4 florists who move on......I realize this may be too much time & work for everyone who moves on, so, let me know if you would be willing to do a new design for round 2, or would you rather let the same designs ride through until the end. I think new designs would be more interesting but could be too much for some of you...

Personally I think I am letting the public voting go too long for round 1. I would like to end it this wed. instead.

I don't want to drag out round 1 too long and lose interest from the public. No need to have the same people voting every day for over a week, LOL. JMO

Just a few suggestions, let me know what you guys think .

Will check once I get to the shop to see if I have a number for him.

IMO repeating the same designs will lose the momentum - and interest on the part of voters. If it's going to be the same arrangement throughout, then we sort of lost the point of having brackets. To save time, the next round could be via 4 still shots of a new design (with either the same or different flower recipe as long as everyone is using the smae criteria).... just a thought.

Some of us haven't even put up our blog posts about the competition and most of the videos have less than 250 views so I wouldn't call round 1 'over-exposed'.

Just a minor suggestion. Some of the designs were a tiny bit hard to judge because they were basically filmed from the top angles. IN a couple, I would have liked to seen an angle from the bottom looking up or at least filmed from an exactly straight angle with the design. I consider the vase treatment important.

Sure has been hard to judge with so many really good entries. All my judging was done by using score sheets.

Again, All entries due on Thursday March 11th. Public voting on Round 1 will begin March 12th through March 20th and Ricky will announce the winner by YouTube video on March 22nd.

Round 2 -
(between 4 florists left) will start March 23rd & ends March 28th.

Round 3 -
Championship between the last 2 flower designers standing will be on March 29th & ends March 31st.

(more details to follow on round 2 & 3)

Please try to spread the word by Blog, Facebook, Twitter, or any other way you can. Also feel free to take pictures too, and put these on your websites & blogs when done. Good luck everybody!
Adam -

It's time to really decide how the next round will be handled. If it starts on March 23, that gives folks a couple days to shoot their next entry. Will it be another design using the same flowers or something different? I vote different only because IMO we cannot sustain interest just re-entering the same videos. Voters will say 'I already voted' and move on. What started out with a bang will fizzle out

As far as the finals go, more time would be a big help - both to shoot and to vote. The real March Madness (NCAA's) don't play the finals until April 5. Maybe an extension on the time line?

Ya' know, nobody ever said running a competition would be easy. ;) Trust me. Been there. Done that. :>

I agree Cathy. Ok

For round 2,
We must do a new design Video. yes another video, to stay consistent with round 1.

If your same designer is not up to doing another design/video, you can have another designer do one.

If, I even make it to round 2,
I may have one of my girls try a design instead.

If you move on to round 2 and are not able to participate for some reason, let us know ASAP, and we will pick one of the 4 losers from round 1 to move on in your spot.

As for the recipes for round 2, good idea Cathy, lets talk about that now. Everyone throw out design / recipe ideas for round 2 on this thread, and I will make a decision by this thurs and post it.

I will also push back the championship round 3 per Cathy's request. I agree we will need more time for that. I may even give a few extra days for round 2 if needed...

You are right, starting a contest isn't easy! LOL

Sorry I am not more on top of this, fortunately we have been really busy the last 2 weeks :)

I vote for different flowers for recipe in round 2.

We're busy, too. :) Must be the video. ;)

The new flower list really should be selected today - or tomorrow at the latest - so shops can have time to get all the stems in inventory and have them conditioned, opened and ready to use.

Ok- I think you did a great job picking the first recipe, so I am Ok with Cathy posting a second recipe ( if you have time), and we can confirm it by tonight. Anyone else feel free to post too, I agree we need to give the 4 florists that go into round 2, some time to prepare.

How about:
- 2 Dozen roses
- 3 other flower types (designer's choice)
- 4 foliage varieties
- 1 twig type material (willow, blooming branches, etc...)
- container of designer's choice

- again, no beads, pods or other decorative accessories
- must be in a single, deliverable unit
- Roses MUST be the prominent flower and occupy at least 60% of the floral visuals.
- Designs must be shown on all sides (in 360 degrees)

Thoughts?

Good news. I called Carolina Pottery today and got a hold of Ricky, he is buying a new labtop tonight and will get working on watching videos, to make a decision this weekend.

Round 2 recipe-
Cathy, that looks good to me, but not sure about the 3 flower types (designers choice), maybe we should make that more clear so no one uses too many extra flowers in the design, even though you say roses need to be 60% of the floral visuals. Maybe we should all use the same 3 flower types, and limit the amount of stems you can use? Just a suggestion but I'm fine with your way too :)
